The Beginner’s 3D Printing Starter Kit: Tools and Supplies You’ll Actually Use

Illustration of 3D printing tools and accessories such as a scraper, cutters and calipers.

The printer is only part of the story. A handful of small tools and supplies make printing cleaner, safer and a lot less stressful. Here is the short list of things beginners really use, split into must-haves and nice-to-haves.

The must-haves

  • PLA filament. The most forgiving material for your first spools. Buy a reputable brand in a color you like, and a second color for variety.
  • Flush cutters (snips). For trimming filament and removing supports and stray strings cleanly.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. For cleaning the build plate before prints.
  • A scraper or spatula. For lifting stubborn prints. Check your plate maker’s guidance, as some surfaces can be damaged by metal tools.
  • Digital calipers. A cheap pair lets you measure parts, check dimensions and tune your printer.

Very useful extras

  • Needle-nose pliers and tweezers. For pulling out stray filament and supports in tight spots.
  • Small deburring tool or hobby knife. For cleaning edges. Cut away from your body.
  • Sandpaper in a few grits. For smoothing surfaces before painting.
  • Spare nozzles. They are inexpensive and clogs are a fact of life.
  • Allen keys and a small screwdriver set. For maintenance and tightening screws.
  • Dry box or sealed bins with desiccant. To keep filament dry.
  • Cut-resistant gloves. If you spend a lot of time trimming and scraping.

If you choose resin printing

  • Nitrile gloves, safety glasses and a well-ventilated area
  • Isopropyl alcohol for washing prints (or a dedicated wash station)
  • A UV curing station or lamp
  • Paper towels and a way to dispose of waste resin safely

Software to install (all free)

  • A slicer: Cura, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer or the one your printer maker recommends.
  • Tinkercad: a browser-based tool for designing simple models, perfect for beginners.
  • Model libraries: accounts on Printables, MakerWorld or Thingiverse for free downloads.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend a little more on filament and flush cutters. Cheap filament causes headaches, and a dull cutter is frustrating. Save on everything else until you know what you actually need. You do not need an expensive workshop to get great results.

A simple starter shopping list

  1. Two spools of PLA
  2. Flush cutters
  3. Isopropyl alcohol and cloths
  4. Calipers
  5. A spare nozzle
  6. A small set of Allen keys

That is enough to print confidently from day one. Add tools as you find that you need them.
